[SEOUL] SMALL AWAKENINGS: MATTHEW STONE

Choi&Lager Gallery presents ‘small awakenings’ by British artist Matthew Stone. Following on from ‘Back into the Body’ in 2017, this will be Stone’s second solo exhibition at the gallery in Seoul, showcasing new works he has developed over the past year.

Stone begins by photographing real paint strokes, which he then cuts out and combines using various graphics and 3D modeling software. This process enables the artist to paint onto sculptural models whilst navigating a 3D virtual space. This space is eventually committed to a fixed vantage point, rendered and printed onto raw linen. The resulting imagery depicts dynamic bodies, tumbling drapery and isolated abstract gestural marks that seem to float with an enlarged sense of space and depth. Rather than functioning as purely illusionistic marks used to suggest real world space, Stone’s brushstrokes are also often singular objects in and of themselves and in their own world.

The artist uses a technological approach to overcome specific limitations of painting that might only be imagined in a digital age. This digital disruption extends to a theme reflected on by Stone in the title of the show ‘small awakenings’ and included works, that show figures holding draped banners to the sky inscribed with simplistic self-help & positive-psychology statements. Stone feels that “We are witnessing the widespread integration of the internet and it’s impact on our cognitive evolution is huge. At various points my own urges to share what have seemed like sudden expansions in personal, political, philosophical and spiritual awareness has felt urgent. Now upon reflection it feels more pertinent to frame or expose the development of my thinking rather than the specific content of it.”

Stone’s methods reflect a contemporary desire to move toward something real and embodied, while consciously using the same technologies one might think to reject in search of an authentic connection.

Die Galerie Choi&Lager präsentiert "small awakenings" des britischen Künstlers Matthew Stone. Nach "Back into the Body" im Jahr 2017 ist dies Stones zweite Einzelausstellung in der Galerie in Seoul, in der er neue Werke zeigt, die er im vergangenen Jahr entwickelt hat.

Stone fotografiert zunächst echte Pinselstriche, die er dann ausschneidet und mithilfe verschiedener Grafik- und 3D-Modellierungssoftware kombiniert. Dieser Prozess ermöglicht es dem Künstler, auf skulpturale Modelle zu malen, während er sich in einem virtuellen 3D-Raum bewegt. Dieser Raum wird schließlich an einem festen Standpunkt fixiert, gerendert und auf Rohleinen gedruckt. Die daraus resultierenden Bilder zeigen dynamische Körper, taumelnde Faltenwürfe und isolierte abstrakte gestische Zeichen, die mit einem erweiterten Gefühl für Raum und Tiefe zu schweben scheinen. Anstatt als rein illusionistische Zeichen zu fungieren, die den Raum der realen Welt suggerieren, sind Stones Pinselstriche oft auch einzigartige Objekte in sich selbst und in ihrer eigenen Welt.

초이앤라거 서울은 6 월 26 일부터 7 월 25 까지 매튜 스톤의 개인전 ‘small awakenings (작은 깨달음들)’ 전을 개최한다. 이번 전시는 지난 2017년도 개인전에 이어 한국에서는 여는 두 번째 개인전으로 약 20 점을 전시한다.

매튜 스톤은 먼저 투명한 유리판 위에 그림을 그리고 그 그림을 사진으로 찍어낸 후 이 사진 이미지를 3D 소프트 웨어를 이용하여 직접 제작한 다른 형태의 이미지들과 합성한다. 이렇게 해서 만든 디지털 이미지를 캔버스에 프린트하면 작품이 완성이 된다. 현대에 가장 업데이트된 디지털 테크놀로지를 이용하지만 오히려 그 작업 과정은 아날로그 기술을 이용한 방법보다도 복잡하고 시간이 많이 걸리는 작업이다. 이는 그가 회화나 사진이라는 미술사에 있어서 지극히 전통적인 창작의 방식을 현대적인 테크놀로지에 접목시켜 새로운 형식의 시각 예술을 창조하는 작가임을 보여준다. 작가는 추상과 구상이 혼합된 구도나 색채, 형태들은 미술사의 흐름을 깊이 탐구하고 이해할 수 있게 해주며 동시에 사진과 회화, 컴퓨터 그래픽, 퍼포먼스의 경계를 넘나들면서 이를 뒤집고 혼합해버리는 과감하고도 새로운 표현 방식을 보여준다.

이번 전시에서는 그가 기존에 사용해왔던 르네상스나 바로크 회화에서 주된 소재로 등장했던 ‘천’과 기존 매튜 스톤의 작품 세계에서 꾸준히 발전되어왔던 ‘인체’의 이미지를 사용한 작품들을 전시한다. 이번 전시 작품들은 디지털과 인터넷이 지배하는 시대를 살아가는 현대인들이 이 시대를 바라보는 시각과 이들이 전통적인 시대의 옛 가치들을 찾아가는 현상들에 대한 관찰을 하면서 시작되었다.

이번 전시의 주된 창작 아이디어에 대해 매튜 스톤은 이렇게 말한다.“나는 디지털 기술과 인터넷이 어떻게 세상과 사람들의 생각이나 커뮤니케이션 방법들에 영향을 주어왔는지에 대해 늘 관심을 가져왔습니다. 무한히 쏟아지는 인터넷 상의 정보들을 보면 이 세상에는 너무나 중요한 변화들과 원대한 가치들이 생겨나고 사람들은 이를 보며 삶에 대한 새로운 시각을 가지고 자기 자신과 세상을 바꾸려는 마음을 먹기도 하죠. 하지만 이러한 거대한 변화를 겪어오던 현 세대들은 오히려 오래 전부터 존재해왔던 전통적인 가치들을 다시 되돌아보게 되었죠. 이렇게 원대한 변화를 겪은 것 같은 디지털 시대의 역사 속에서 인간이 정신적인 세계에서 겪은 지각들은 사실 그다지 원대하지 않을 수도 있고 그럴 필요도 없다는 생각을 하게 되었습니다. 이 전시의 제목 ‘작은 깨달음들’은 이러한 맥락에서 정하게 되었습니다”

매튜 스톤의 이번 신작들에서 천들은 매우 화려한 리본의 형태로 인체의 형상과 뒤엉켜 있는데 자세히 보면 그 안에는 우리 삶에서 매우 보편적이고 단순하지만 근본적인 가치를 나타내는 단어들이 숨어있다. 이 또한 전시 제목의 의미와 상통한다. 가상공간 안에서 인간의 특징들이 드러나도록 시도하고 현실 세계와 연결하려는 이미지를 만드는 것은 테크놀로지와 함께하는 삶과 우리가 탐색하는 온라인 및 오프라인 사이의 관계를 반영한다. 즉 그는 다양한 매체를 통해 편리하게 커뮤니케이션 하고 있는 듯 보이지만 사실상 정반대의 결과를 초래하는 동시대의 현상을 되돌려 놓고자 하는 욕망을 탐구한다.
