Alfie Caine (b.1996) is a British artist who lives and works in Rye, East Sussex. Caine creates architectural dreamscapes in his intricately constructed paintings, merging domestic scenes with striking natural landscapes to form environments that are idealised, yet always tinged with familiarity. His scenes are inviting and revel in the small moments of pleasure we take in daily life, lighting a candle, or admiring freshly picked flowers. Yet their surrounding imaginary, almost fantastical, interiors and landscape exude a surreality that draws us beyond daily life and into the otherworldly realm of dreams.

Moments of Calm is a body of work which sees Caine approach exhibition making in a new and distinctly cinematic way. A through line runs between the works in the exhibition, linking each irrevocably to the other as Caine draws on personal experience of environments and one particular setting as the anchor for his works. The landscapes and atmosphere of Rye, a town in Sussex, UK, where the artists lives and works, permeate all his paintings. The rolling hills and expanses of water of the South Downs and the town’s quiet historical feel are tangible and recognisable throughout Moments of Calm.

 

Caine’s background in architecture is evident in the attention to detail paid to every aspect of his work and his mastery of draftsmanship. The former Cambridge architecture student has been featured in gallery exhibitions internationally including his inaugural solo exhibition What Lies Beyond, Union Gallery, London. UK (2021); High Humanity, Jack Siebert Projects, Paris, France (2022) and What Now? PM/AM Gallery, London, UK.

Alfie Caine (geb. 1996) ist ein britischer Künstler, der in Rye, East Sussex, lebt und arbeitet. Caine schafft in seinen aufwendig konstruierten Gemälden architektonische Traumlandschaften. Diese häuslichen Szenen mit markanten Naturlandschaften verschmelzen zu einer Form, die zwar idealisiert sind, aber immer mit einem Hauch von Vertrautheit umgeben sind. Seine Szenen laden ein in die kleinen Genussmomente des Alltags zu schwelgen, wie eine Kerze anzuzünden oder eine frisch gepflückte Blumen zu bewundern. Diese fast phantastischen Innenräume und Landschaften strahlen eine Surrealität aus, die uns über den Alltag hinaus entführt in das jenseitige Reich der Träume.

 

Moments of Calm ist eine Werkgruppe, in der Caine sich der Presentation einer Ausstellung auf eine neue und eindeutig filmischen Weise nähert. Eine durchgehende Linie verläuft zwischen den Werken in der Ausstellung und verbindet sie unwiderruflich miteinander, da Caine persönliche Erfahrungen mit Umgebungen und einem bestimmten Umfeld als Anker für seine Werke heranzieht. Die Landschaften und die Atmosphäre von Rye, einer Stadt in Sussex, Großbritannien, wo der Künstler lebt und arbeitet, durchdringen alle seine Gemälde. Die sanften Hügel und Wasserflächen der South Downs und das ruhige historische Flair der Stadt sind in Moments of Calm greifbar und erkennbar.

Caines gute Kenntnisse in der Architektur zeigen sich in seiner Liebe zum Detail und seiner Beherrschung der Zeichenkunst, die sich in jedem Aspekt seiner Arbeit ausdrückt. Der ehemalige Architekturstudent aus Cambridge hat bisher in folgenden Galerieausstellungen ausgestellt, darunter seine erste Einzelausstellung 'What Lies Beyond', Union Gallery, London. ‘Moment of Calm’ 몽유도원의 풍경- 알피 케인 개인전

알피 케인(Alfie Caine, 1996년생)은 이스트 서식스주 라이에서 거주하며 작업하는 영국의 예술가이다. 케인은 복잡하게 구성된 그림에서 건축적인 몽환적 풍경을 창조하며, 주거 풍경과 눈에 띄는 자연 경관을 결합하여, 이상화되었지만 항상 친숙함으로 물든 환경을 조형적으로 형성한다. 그의 회화적 장면들은 우리가 일상에서 취하 는 작은 즐거움의 순간들을 불러들이고, 촛불을 켜거나, 갓 딴 꽃들을 감상하도록 배치되어 있다. 그러나 그들을 둘러싼 이미지들, 거의 환상적인 인테리어와 풍경은 우리를 일상생활을 넘어 다른 세계 혹은 꿈의 영역으로 이끄는 초현실적 이미지를 만들어낸다.

<Moments of Calm>은 작가가 새롭고 분별되는 영화적 방식으로 접근한 전시이다. 케인이 자신의 작품에 깊이 정박해 있는 것으로써 (삶의) 환경에 대한 개인적인 경험과 특정한 장소를 그릴 때, 전시된 작품들 사이를 관통하는 일관된 기조가 내재하고 있다. 그것은 작가가 거주하며 작품 활동을하는 영국 서식스의 한 마을 라이의 풍경과 분위기가 그의 모든 그림에 스며들어있기때문이다. 일테면 관객들은 사우스 다운스의 구불구불한 언덕과 넓은 물줄기와 마을의 조용한 역사적 느낌이 고요의 순간을 통해 인식가능한 실재적인 것으로 감각하게 된다.

케인의 작업에서 건축학적 배경은 데생에서의 숙달에서는 물론이고 그의 작품의 모든 측면에서 세부에 집중하는 경향을 통해 명백하게 나타난다. 케임브리지 건축학과 학생이었던 그는 첫 번째 개인전인 <What Lies Beyond>(Union Gallery, London. UK, 2021)를 포함하여 국제적인 갤러리가 주관하는 전시회에 출품했다. <High Humanity>(Jack Siebert Projects, Paris, France, 2022), <What Now?>(PM/AM Gallery, London, UK, 2022)
